Project: Wulff’s Pool
Location: Batten Kill between the Eagleville Bridge and the Highway 61 Bridge in Shushan, NY.
Time Frame: 2002
Partners: Clearwater and Adirondack Trout Unlimited project with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The Alliance was so new we really just observed.
Problem Description: The river channel had become over widened and shallow, and a flood channel was functioning to cut off an important meander.
Project Work Completed: A series of rock vanes were installed to preserve the meander by redirecting the main force of the flow and to recreate the famous “Wulff’s Pool”. In the decade since, the structures have functioned to use the force and flow of the current to accomplish the goals of the project.
Photos: In the slide show depict construction of the rock vane with heavy equipment, the completed rock vane later that fall (looking upstream) jutting out into the stream, a view of the rock vane in the fall of 2011, following Tropical Storm Irene, and some large woody debris recruited downstream of the rock vane.
