Project: White Creek
Location: White Creek upstream and downstream around Salem Village, NY.
Time Frame: begun in 2003 and continuing in 2012
Partners: Adirondack and Clearwater Trout Unlimited Chapters with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Town & Village of Salem, NY.
Problem Description: Extensive channelization of White Creek has led to disrupted sediment transport, poor habitat and poor dynamics, while dense settlement along the creek has led both to loss of flood plain access and to significant flood damage to residences.
Project Work Completed: Stone and wood structures (newberry weirs and rock vanes) have been installed to improve dynamics and sediment transport and to provide bank stabilization.
Photos: The photo above shows a stone weir functioning properly, creating areas of riffles and pools in White Creek, having survived Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. When installed correctly, such stone weirs improve diversity of habitat.
