Project: Habitat Restoration at “The Scales” (Jensens), Batten Kill.
Location: in the Batten Kill upstream and downstream of “The Scales” --- a large pulloff along Rte 313 in West Arlington, VT.
Time Frame: 2010
Partners: Green Mountain National Forest, Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department, Bennington County Conservation District, Southwestern Vermont Trout Unlimited, Trout & Salmon Foundation, Battenkill Conservancy Vermont, the Jensens.
Problem Description: Scientific studies indicate a lack of sufficient cover and shelter in the Batten Kill for good trout habitat.
Project Work Completed: Cover and shelter structures of wood and stone were installed along reach of the river about 1,200 feet long in an area with good public access for angling. Additional aspects of this project include: improvement of river dynamics, expanded plantings of trees and bushes along the banks, and bank stabilization for the property owners.
Photos: Photos in the slideshow above show projects work underway - with an excavator midstream installing rock and log structures, a large log structure constructed around an existing live willow, delivery of project materials (including large boulders and whole trees) by semi-trailer, and a view of the reach of river restored in this project.
