Project: Fosters’ Farm
Location: in the Batten Kill off Foster Lane from Highway 64, (upstream of the RR bridge) in Shushan, NY.
Time Frame: 2007 to 2009.
Partners: NY Department of Environmental Conservation, State Senator Betty Little, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Washington County Soil, Water, and Conservation District, Clearwater & Adirondack Chapters of Trout Unlimited, the Fosters.
Problem Description: Poor river dynamics related to past bank stabilization efforts had led to bank erosion along a productive farm field and to a channel cut that eliminated an important river meander. Trout habitat was also compromised by lack of cover and shelter. Protection of transportation infrastructure was also factored into the overall project scope of work.
Project Work Completed: Rock vanes were installed all along the reach to protect the banks and improve dynamics and habitat, and a large structure of logs and rock was built to restore a meander and prevent a channel cut. Trees and bushes have been planted to create riverwoods on the banks.
Photos: Photos in the slideshow above show two views of the rock vanes installed, and a view looking downstream showing the river meandering to the left, with the large rock and log structure to the right.
