Project: Conservation Easement on the Green River
Location: The reach of the river is at the upstream end of Green River Road off Sandgate Road. in Arlington.
Time Frame: 2010.
Partners: VT DEC, Vermont Center for Clean and Clear, VT River Management Program, Vermont Land Trust, Tom Greene.
Problem Description: The Green River has been straightened and channelized in many reaches, and both habitat and stream dynamics would be improved if channel migration was possible.
Project Work Completed: The landowner with property on both sides of the Green River for some distance agreed to a permanent easement which will allow the stream to move around and form meanders or riverwood deposits in a natural way, along with a commitment to have trees along the banks. This permanent protection of natural stream dynamics will ensure good habitat for trout and other wildlife forever.
Photos: Photos in the slideshow above show natural woody debris accumulated in the Green River and a bar forming through natural river processes.
